Articles that change the meaning

Korean lacks articles, so learners often drop "a," "an," or "the" and rely on context that English does not supply. Fowler's Modern English Usage states that the indefinite article signals one instance among many while the definite article points to a specific or previously mentioned item; removing either can turn a general claim into a particular one or the reverse. The exception appears in fixed expressions and mass-noun constructions where the zero article is required, yet those cases still follow predictable patterns once the governing rule is learned.

Articles do flip a sentence from general to specific sometimes, that part is fair. Still, context usually carries the load in real talk, so say it anyway and fix the article on the next rep. Day 412 of shadowing shows you improve faster by using it than by pausing over every rule.

ngl that fowler bit lands when the sentence is standing alone, but in actual talk the listener fills in the gaps nine times out of ten so just say the thing and move on.
