Why "The" Is Not Optional

A recent post asked about a sentence missing both articles, and the writer said "they understood me." That is a dangerously low bar. In English, "I saw man with dog" and "I saw the man with the dog" do not carry the same meaning — the first could refer to any man and any dog, the second refers to specific ones. Dropping "the" does not simplify your English; it introduces ambiguity that your reader will not pause to resolve. Correct it once, and it stays corrected.
